Very Interesting Debate to follow!
Lameck Mahachi launched the debate:
If ever there was a newspaper in the belligerent ZanuPF-led Zimbabwe that has managed to hoodwink people into believing that it serves democratic interest none can outplay the Daily Mirror.
To imagine that it has successfully managed to recruit people like Kuthula to become its feature scribe is something that must be highly commendable because our friend has the skin of a chameleon akin of the Daily Mirror's modus operandi, a newspaper that has managed to stay alive where others have been silenced.
No matter how much people have continued to suffer under Mugabe or how the opposition is systematically being harassed and tortured, brother Matshazi will tell you something else. The economy is in the intensive care unit but our friend will turn around and say this is because of the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the west. You point it out to him that these so-called sunctions are solely imposed on ZanuPF stulwarts prohibiting them from travelling to the west. But Mr Matshazi will emphatically say THAT'S NOT THE CASE.
Then you ask yourself a question as to how can such an intransigent person write for a newspaper that purports to persue democratic principles? And the answer becomes obvious: birds of the same feathers.
I have been trying in my small measure to discourage Bro Hove from indulging in a personal dialogue with Mr Kuthula Matshazi because the man will always maintain that the gripping problems of Zimbabwe has nothing to do with Mugabe and his greedy ZanuPF thugs but the West although he himself is eating out of the hands of the west (Canada).
You can talk yourself hoarse that the land issue was the driving force behind the war of liberation that its re-distribution was to redress the backbone of survival for the blackman whose livelihood traditionally depended on the soil which he was deprived of since 1890. But Mr Matshazi will reason that it was Britain which reneged on its promise to compansate white farmers. He totally forgets that Mugabe conveniently forgot to address the paramount land issue in its infancy opting instead to concentrate on looting from the state and the DRC. It was only when his popularity was begining to wane that 20 years later, with the help of the late Chenjerai Hilter Hundzvi, the land issue was then address in earnest culminating in chaos as it was done haphazardly.
Had this been done two to five into independence nothing of this idiocy could have happened. But instead Mugabe was busy gallivanting around the globe earning nicknames like Marco Polo, Vasco da Gama and taking his loot to shop at the Harrods in London. In the meantime his henchmen were also busy on their side milking the country dry and shamelessly bringing big industries like Zisco and Hwange Collieries to their knees. As if this was not enough, we are told that a good percentage of the Colliery has been sold to a Malasian conglomerate.
The ills of Mugabe are to vast to contemplate but some people are too blind to realise that the man has destroyed the nation.
On a sombre note I have failed to make head or tail of Mr Matshazi's statement when he wrote this in reply to one letter on this forum:-"Social wealth is one of them. When you have social wealth, you will find out that you wont be so vendictive (doing anything to get your way - slaughtering opponents, lying, deceit, dabbling your hands in everything and anything, etc - just to get ahead). That's the spirit of capitalism and Musonza seems to have masterfully internalised it."

Dear Lameck Mahachi,
First, I wish you Happy Holidays and am sorry to realise that you were seething during a time when we should be enjoying the spirit of the Holidays. Secondly, you sound angry and unfortunately display ignorance.
Just to prove to the people that you do not know what you are talking about, could you please quote the Law(s)/Policy(ies) that including the exact sections that provide for the sanctions of the ZPF individuals. By this I am not saying they are there. I am afraid that you might, in your desperation to defend yourself, then twist my statement. However, I want you to point to us those sections and policies.
After this, you will realise that the state you are in is called ignorance. But if you know what you are writing about, but you decide to mislead people, then we are going to say your are a liar. But of course you seem not to see anything wrong about lying.
And the fact that I am "eating in the hands of the west (Canada)" its pathetic. Who told you that I eat from anybody's hands? Secondly, this meek statement of yours shows that you pander to people that "you eat in their hands". You are not a man of your own. Well, if you do not that do not include me in your gang. I am a man of my own and engage in issues as I see them. I, unlike you, am not driven by anger, malice, ignorance and mean attitude to insult people who do not subscribe to your views that are subservient to those people that you "eat from their hands". I am driven by issues, pragmatism and reason.
Enjoy your Holidays and let the anger and inhliziyo embi go. Uzabulawa yikucunuka.
Best,
Kuthula

Dear Kuthula Matshazi
The term "You are eating out of the hands of the west (Canada)" is very self explanatory if you are prepared to see reason. In this context I don't mean that a person of your calibre can survive on the dole that is always provided to the unemployed in most western countries. But rather the enviroment created by most western countries makes live much more bearable compared to most African countries especially Zimbabwe from where people like yourself have opted to leave. Thus eating from the hands (enviroment) of the west (Cananda). So, my friend, trying to twist issues by a person of your inteligence does not help the situation at all.
Most western countries' imposition of travel bans on all ZanuPF thugs does not mean sanctions on Zimbabwe as a country. I fail to decipher what you mean by......"could you please quote the Law(s)/Policy(ies) that including the exact sections that provide for the sanctions of the ZPF individuals."
The most unfortunate scenerio at present is that most of these thugs are able to circumvent this ban with the help of their sympathisers who reside or who are able to travel to the west.
Yours in the struggle from different platforms,
Lameck Mahachi

You see Lameck Mahachi that you are now scrambling to justify yourself. Why then did you not say what you are saying now (Eating out of the hand stuff) in very straight forward way? Actually, I also did not mean that I live on "dole that is always provided to the unemployed" rather that I do not have to be subservient to certain quarters in terms of viewpoints.
Most stunning, you dodge to answer a direct question of quoting the policies or laws that put the so-called sanctions. Yes, we know that many Western countries say they imposed targeted sanctions. But what I am asking you is to point us to such laws. The reason why I kindly request this is that there is a danger that you regurgitate things that you do not know about. From your response you seem to confirm your ignorance. You do not know the laws that enforced these measures. You seem to just be talking aloud of things that you have no knowledge about. My challenge still stands. SHOW US THE LAWS/POLICIES THAT UNDERPIN THE SANCTIONS.
From your response, you seem to be only good in insulting people, labelling and objectifying them from an ignorant point of view. I think you are doing yourself a disservice amongst many in the forum.
I can only feel for you as you embarass yourself. Keep up your "struggle".
Best, Kuthula

Every Zimbabwean knows let, alone the entire world, that the targeted sanctions were imposed on the ZanuPF government ministers and a host of their symphathisers because on their violation of human rights and the wantom breakdown of the rule of law caused by these savages. In fact it was their breach of with the Cotonou Agreement that triggered the EU countries to impose these targeted sanctions.
On February 18, 2002 the EU Council of Foreign Ministers imposed targeted sanctions on the government of Zimbabwe because of the failure on the Zimbabwean government to prevent the on-going political violence and respect the principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in the run to the March presidential election.
At the same time it was also decided to terminate political dialogue under the EU-African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Partnership Agreement under this Cotonou Agreement to which Zimbabwe is a signatory and to suspend EU-Zimbabwe Development Cooperation Programmes except those in direct support of the population. Unfortunately ZanuPF is fighting to control this path by institutionalising NGOs with the guise of curbing WESTERNISATION when in the actual fact they are fighting to control the only viable channel left that brings foreign currency into the country.
It must also be known that in addition to banning these maniacs from travelling to the west, these targeted sanctions also take the form of an embargo on the sale, supply or transfer of arms and technical advice, assitance or training related to military activities and an embargo on the sale or supply of equipment which could be used for internal repression which Mugabe has a well-documented history of given the Matebeleland and parts of Midland Gukurahundi killings.
So to try and be big-headed to ask to be shown Laws/Policies that underpin these targeted sanction is a non-starter.
These targeted sanctions are aimed solely at thos who the EU judges to be reponsible for the violence, for the violations of human right and for preventing the holding of free and fair elections in Zimbabwe.
Mr Robert Gabriel Mugabe knows pretty well the position of the EU regarding these targeted sanction as they have been in dialogue with him in their quest to try and make him realise the predicament of breaking to Cotonou Agreement of which he is the signatory.
The EU expressly informed him by way of letters that the position of the Zimbabwean Government remains very grave in terms of human rights violations. He has been constantly reminded that when the EU, Zimbabwe and the other African, Caribbean and Pacific countries signed the Cotonou agreement in 2000 all said in Article 9 that respect for human rights, democratic principles and the rule of law should underpin all the signatories' policies. But Mugabe continues to undermine all these fundamental rights.
Because the EU made it plain that its ministers will continue to provide contributions to operations of a humanitarian nature and support the population of Zimbabwe directly particularly those affected by the current declining economy and food crisis; Mugabe and his ZanuPF zealots are mangling and hoodwinking people into saying the aid is provided by ZanuPF.
Targeted sanctions will remain intact untill Mugabe reforms for the better. The only stumbling block is his ability to use Zimbabwean population as his human shield.
Best wishes for 2007,
Lameck

Lameck Mahachi,
You are mean spirited. You think insulting and using strong language will make you right or frighten us away from exposing your ignorance. No we are not frightened.
So to try and be big-headed to ask to be shown Laws/Policies that underpin these targeted sanction is a non-starter. It is strange that you think people who ask you to show whether you know what you are talking about are big heads. Why don't you want to point to us the policy that you outline. I take it that you are embarassed that you have been exposed. I CHALLENGE YOU AGAIN TO SHOW US THE SECTIONS FROM WHERE YOU GOT THE INFORMATION THAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. I am sure when you bring up the section/s and the actual policy/Act, then you will be exposed for exactly what you are.
Best in the New Year.
Kuthula
What you have done so far is explain the sanctions. We have heard these explanations so much that we now understand the mantra. Simply show us where you derive your explanations.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Kuthula,
It is becoming very clear that the ignorance you are displaying is slowly derailing your political faculty to understand situations in their perspective. I have been saying it all along and I will still say it again that these targeted sanction were imposed by the EU member-states in concurrence with other western countries because Mugabe and his cronies have and still are breaching the Cotonou Agreement of which he (Mugabe) is a signatory. He is in breach of Article 9 of that Agreement.
There are others who continue to suggest that the EU acted in this matter as if it considered itself in some way superior as though it wished to push Zimbabwe/Mugabe around. People who habour such thoughts are missing a crucial point because the EU entered into this agreement or any other agreements for that matter with its partners as equals. The rules of Cotonou apply to the EU as much as to any other signatories. Article 9 of that Agreement stipulates that all signatory countries must uphold the rule of law, respect of human rights, holding of free and fair elections etc. all of which Mugabe does not observe.
The Section(s)/Policy(ies)/Law(s) for these targeted sanctions are contained in this "COTONOU AGREEMENT."

Lameck,
You see that you wrongly point to the policy that effected the sanctions policy. Now, so that you do not say things you do not know...go to the EU website and then go to the SANCTIONS sections. There, you will be shown the sanctions policy and the current list of sanctions. Read the EU Common POlicy and pay attention to Clause (2) before you get into the Articles.
Then go to the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001 and look at the overview and Sections 4 and 6. You will realise in both cases that there are provisions for economic sanctions against Zimbabwe and then for individuals. This is opposite to your gospel. Imagine, you even had the temerity to call me ignorant while most unwittingly you demonstrated that you simply do not know what you are talking about. You just mix up things and confuse people. That is why its important to pay attention to detail and understand these things. Its a bad way to start 2007...demonstrating your ignorance in a boastful manner!!!
I hope your fortunes change in 2007!!!!
Best, Kuthula
